Binche-Chimay-Binche

Binche honours the career of Adrien Petit

On Tuesday 7th of October, the city of Binche hosted not only the final race on the Belgian calendar, but also the final chapter in Adrien Petit's career, as he bid farewell to his fans after fifteen seasons in the professional peloton.

It was an especially emotional day for the 35-year-old French rider, who had twice finished on the podium at Binche–Chimay–Binche, in the heartland of the Wanty group and the Walloon structure led by Jean-François Bourlart, with the race finishing on the cobbles of the Grand-Place.

In the presence of his loved ones and his fan club, the “Bison of Arras” received a heartfelt tribute from his colleagues, who formed a guard of honour at the start. The loyal teammate went on to deliver a strong performance in support of his team right up to the final kilometres, before crossing the line one last time to a standing ovation.

A model of dedication and selflessness, Adrien Petit ends a career crowned with nine professional victories, numerous podium finishes — including a prestigious silver medal at the U23 World Championships — and a wealth of experience which he shared over four seasons with Intermarché–Wanty.

“On Monday, I left for the hotel as if it were any normal race. But since then, it’s been one surprise after another. In the evening for example, our team chef even prepared my favorite dish — Flemish stew — so I could share it with the riders and staff. And everyone kept telling me how special this moment would be for me." “And this Tuesday morning, when I arrived at the start, I was deeply moved to see my fan club there: 80 people had made the trip, some from far away. It really touched me. My best friends, my family, my wife, my daughter, my training partners… all the people who have supported me throughout my 15-year career.” “My daughter Andrea had even customized my Elite bottles, like she often does with her thoughtful little gestures. And in the peloton, several colleagues reminded me how much they appreciated me — both as a rider and as a person. Before the start, they gave me a truly special moment: a guard of honour as I headed to the line. These are the kind of gestures that stay with you, that go straight to the heart.” “My job in the peloton has always been to fight for my position, working for the sprinters, and that’s why it’s such a great satisfaction today to feel this recognition — to feel respected while having stayed true to myself. I expected some emotion, but not this much. For the occasion, I even wore my UVEX glasses… this time, to protect me from the emotions!” “I’ve been lucky enough to live my passion for 15 years, filled with many beautiful moments. This decision has been long thought out, and I was ready to turn the page. I wanted to say goodbye at Binche–Chimay–Binche, a race I’ve always had a soft spot for. Ever since the announcement with the team, I’d been looking forward to this day. I left with peace of mind and a light heart, happy to close this chapter of my life in such a symbolic setting.”
