Gerben Thijssen wins again with a bike jump

Less than two weeks after his success in the sprint in the Grand Prix Monseré, Gerben Thijssen repeated his stunt in the Bredene-Koksijde Classic this Friday.

The 24 year old sprinter again won with a bike jump, preceding Pascal Ackermann with half a wheel after launching his effort in the final 100 meter.

Earlier that day, his teammates Dries De Pooter and Laurenz Rex launched a counterattack behind the early breakaway on the first of two passages on the Kemmelberg, halfway through the race, forcing the other teams to chase.

Once all escapees were caught with more than 40 kilometer to go, Gerben Thijssen could rely on the support of his teammates for the final.

He was perfectly guided by his sprint train, starting the final straight in the slipstream of Ackermann, the record holder in this race, and managed to beat him to achieve the eighth success of the season for Intermarché-Circus-Wanty.

« I'm so happy to win after my disappointment of two days ago in Nokere, where a crash impeded me from participating in the sprint. Today again, I showed that you have to take me into account for bunch sprints. Beating a rider like Ackermann, perfectly launched by Molano, makes me very proud. I waited for the last moment to start my effort because I had confidence in my sprint. I gave my all in the final 100 meter to take my second victory of the season. » « After the last time Kemmelberg, the whole team sacrificed for me in function of a bunch sprint. When I see my teammates giving their all for me, it gives me such a special feeling. They really brought me in a perfect position in the final straight, I devote this victory to them. Dries, Laurenz, Julius, Baptiste, Boy. Thank you. We will celebrate this success with a good bottle of Bière des Amis. »
