The team under direction of Kévin Van Melsen won the first race of its history, Brussels-Opwijk, the first event of the U23 Road Series.
Roel van Sintmaartensdijk took the victory in the sprint ahead of his teammate Axel Huens, beating a group of strong riders at the end of the 162 kilometer race between the King Baudouin Stadium (Laken) and Opwijk (Brabant).
All day long, Jelle Vermoote led the race as part of a breakaway of four riders during the six laps containing the Parent, Blakmeer and Putberg climbs before the local circuit.
Fifteen riders were united under the red flag and Circus-ReUz-Technord took the first two steps of the podium in a sprint.
As winner of the first race, Roel van Sintmaartensdijk leads the general classification of the U23 Pro Series, his teammate Jelle Vermoote is leader in the rushes classification.
« Onze eerste wedstrijd met Circus-ReUz-Technord was een koers uit het boekje! Ten eerste was het deel van ons plan om iemand mee in de ontsnapping te hebben. Dankzij Jelle Vermoote zaten we in het peloton in een zetel, terwijl andere ploegen als DSM en Soudal-QuickStep aan de bak moesten. Eens de kopgroep gegrepen werd, reden we met Axel Huens, Dylan Vandenstorme en Obie Vidts een sterke finale en was het de bedoeling dat ik voor Axel de sprint zou aantrekken. We kwamen als tweede en derde uit de laatste bocht, waarna ik mijn inspanning meteen inzette. Tot mijn verbazing kwam niemand me nog voorbij, waardoor ik diegene was die de handen de lucht mocht insteken. De 2e plaats van Axel maakte ons succes compleet. Dit is niet mijn overwinning, maar die van het hele team! »
