This Saturday 10th of February, Vito Braet won the sprint for second place in the Figueira Champions Classic, achieving his second podium in less than one week for Intermarché-Wanty.
The young Belgian rider won the sprint of a group of fifteen riders behind winner Remco Evenepoel, at the end of a particularly selective hilly classic finishing on three laps on a local circuit around Figueira da Fox, with each of them containing the Rue Parque Florestal climb (2.3km at 8%).
“Rune Herregodts and I could go our own chance today and therefore we could rely on a strong team. Our teammates did half of the work, positioning us each time very well at the foot of the climbs. Then it was our mission to survive as long as possible. The approach towards the sprint was on a large road, you could see the finish from far. So as usual I waited until the last moment to make my move towards the front and launch the sprint. It worked, I finished second behind Remco Evenepoel, which was probably the best possible result today. For the second time in less than one week I managed to reward the confidence of the team with a podium result, which makes me very happy. I’m now looking forward with great enthusiasm to using my good condition in the sprint train of Gerben in the Volta ao Algarve next week!”
