Laurenz Rex sixth: “We never gave up”

This Saturday 24th of February, Intermarché-Wanty started its campaign of Belgian classics with a sixth place of Laurenz Rex at the end of a particularly exciting edition of Omloop het Nieuwsblad.

He rewarded the hard work of the Walloon World Team, who had to chase for more than 100 kilometer behind a solid leading group of around 30 riders, who managed to escape from the peloton in the first race half.

The efforts of the riders of Intermarché-Wanty paid off during the ascension of the last climb of the day, the Bosberg, where Mike Teunissen and Laurenz Rex made the junction with the lead of the race.

Behind Jan Tratnik and Nils Politt, who attacked in the final, the two riders of Intermarché-Wanty participated in the sprint for third place in Ninove. Laurenz Rex finished sixth and achieved his second top ten in a World Tour classic after his ninth place in Paris-Roubaix last April. Mike Teunissen was thirteenth.

It is the best result for the team of Jean-François Bourlart in this race since the sixth place of Jempy Drucker in 2014, when the event was not part of the World Tour calendar yet.

"We were present at the decisive moments in the beginning of the race, until a group surprised us with more than 100 kilometer to go. Despite this setback, we stayed calm and united. We could rely on the experience of Adrien Petit or Mike Teunissen and the advice from our sports directors to handle this difficult moment and to never give up. And the team was exceptional to close the gap to the leading group. We probably also had this bit of luck you often need in the unpredictable races like the Flemish classics. The encouragements from the sports directors through the radio, when I thought we were in a lost position, pushed us to make a last effort to make the junction with the favourites and race for the podium. This sixth place in a World Tour classic bodes well for the next races, starting with Le Samyn on Tuesday, a race that suits me well."
