This Sunday, Intermarché-Circus-Wanty had a particularly difficult day in the Tour of Flanders. Four of the seven riders were victim of a crash, three of them had to abandon the race.
The first one of them, Taco Van Der Hoorn, crashed 181 kilometer before the finish and was taken to the hospital of Deinze for a more thorough diagnosis. Biniam Girmay and Aimé De Gendt were then caught in a bigger crash before the Kanarieberg, both were transported to the hospital of Ronse.
Laurenz Rex crashed just before the foot of the Eikenberg. Luckily he could continue the race and finish in 49th position. He’s one of the three riders to reach the finish line in Oudenaarde, with Sven Erik Bystrøm (31st) and Dries De Pooter (79th) who participated in the first Monument of his career.
« The first examinations revealed that Taco Van Der Hoorn suffers from concussion and bruises, but no fracture. It is also the case for Biniam Girmay, who has a concussion but no fracture. He was transported to the hospital in Kortrijk where he will stay overnight for observation. The diagnosis is worse for Aimé De Gendt, who fractured his left elbow and will be operated tonight in Herentals. »
