Less than one week after his his stage win in Lekunberri, Rui Costa again delivered an impressive performance in the breakaway in the penultimate stage of La Vuelta, the longest of this edition.
In total, the ten climbs spread on the parcours of 208 kilometer summed up to more than 4500 climbing meters between Manzanares El Real and Guadarrama, in the neighbourhood of Madrid.
In the group of 30 riders, Rui Costa managed his efforts well whilst his competitors one by one lost contact with the lead of the race.
On the final climb the decision was made with the power on the pedals and that’s how Rui Costa ended up in the chasing group of five riders which sprinted for the victory.
Rui Costa won the sprint for sixth place after five hours of effort, achieving the seventh stage top ten in the Vuelta for Intermarché-Circus-Wanty.

“I was very motivated to chase a good result in this last difficult stage of this Vuelta, which suited me well. I gave everything in the 12 final first uphill kilometers of the first climb to join the strong breakaway. In the final, I absolutely wanted to follow the first group, but it unfortunately wasn’t possible. With my sixth place I probably obtained the best possible result today. It is a nice bonus after my stage victory. Finishing La Vuelta in this way is incredible.”
