Two years after his resounding debut on the Tour of Italy, Biniam Girmay is preparing to make his return to La Corsa Rosa which will set off on Saturday 4th of May from Venaria Reale (Piemonte), to reach the capital Rome three weeks later on Sunday 26th of May.
In 2022, the Eritrean cyclist left his mark on the race by becoming the first rider from Sub-Saharan Africa to win a stage in a three-week event, in addition to five other top 5 finishes and several days in the white jersey and the ciclamino jersey.
Under the direction of Steven De Neef and Pieter Vanspeybrouck, the 24 year old sprinter will participate in the third Grand Tour of his career, the latest being the Tour de France, where he notably obtained a podium in Bordeaux before reaching Paris.
“Biniam Girmay brought us unforgettable memories during his first participation in the Tour of Italy two years ago. But at the same time, there remains a feeling of unfinished business because he was not able to defend his chances until the end. He is very motivated to return there with important objectives. The 2024 edition once again offers great opportunities for his type of riders, thanks to the numerous stages with a difficult finale that can lead to a group sprint. For these reasons, we decided with Biniam to include the Tour of Italy in his program. For his first Grand Tour of the season, we hope to see him continue his trend from the start of the season, during which he was competitive in Australia and in the spring classics. To be there at the Giro, he is following the same preparation as two years ago, with altitude training at his home in Asmara. And he can rely on two of his experienced lieutenants, Adrien Petit and Dion Smith, among others. »
