Route Adélie de Vitré

Top 5 for Biniam Girmay despite avoiding a crash

The rough meteorological conditions spiced up the Route Adélie de Vitré (1.1, 1/10) this Friday in the West of France. This twelfth race of the French Cup was wet from the beginning, causing several crashes from the start, involving Théo Delacroix. That is why the peloton raced with some caution, 5 minutes behind three leaders.

It took before the start of the second local lap around Vitré for the peloton to brutally increase the rhythm. The peloton skimmed dramatically in the second part of the race, composed of eight laps of 9.5 kilometer. Several strong riders, among whom Lorenzo Rota, managed to join the early fugitives. The Italian rider was the engine of the new breakaway but had to make way for a bunch sprint in the final kilometers.

With the help of trainee Maxime Jarnet and Jan Bakelants, despite a crash, vice World Champion U23 Biniam Girmay approached the final kilometer in an excellent position. But a crash with 500 meter to go forced Eritrean to break, hindering his chances for victory. Nevertheless the 21 year old crossed the line in 5th place behind winner De Kleijn.

« It's been one week since I finished on the podium of the World Championships, but I'm still living a dream and I still receive a lot of attention. It is a fantastic memory for myself and for my country. Today, I unfortunately enjoyed my day on the bike less because I really don't appreciate wet circumstances. Luckily I could rely on the help of my teammates to battle against the cold and stress and to avoid crashes. Having Lorenzo in the front in the final was perfect and Jan and Maxime worked to keep me in the front in the peloton. But even there we weren't out of danger. Nacer Bouhanni went full through one of the last corners of the technical circuit and crashed. I had to break and let go four riders. I'm happy to conclude this day with a fifth place and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow. The course is a little harder and hopefully also the weather circumstances will suit me better! »
