GP de Fourmies

Vliegen back in competition: “ready to help my teammates”

After a weekend in the Doubs region, where the riders from Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert left with a victory, a podium and a top 10, another French Cup is on the menu this weekend on the occasion of the Grand Prix de Fourmies (1.Pro, 12/09). This one day race close to the Belgian border is known for its spectacular sprints, at the end of a downhill section through the centre of Fourmies. The parcours of 197.6 kilometer through Picardie begins with a loop of 150.5 kilometer before five local laps of 11 kilometer. The big loop contains three smaller circuits with the Côte Bocquet and the Sacré Coeur. In the previous years, the hilly parcours didn’t deter the chances of the sprinters.

After winning the Classic Grand Besançon and finishing 2nd in the previous French Cup, Biniam Girmay Hailu continues the racing in France with renewed ambitions. Next to him, he will find Baptiste Planckaert, who never disappoints in the races of the French Cup. The Belgian rider already finished four times in the top 10 of the GP de Fourmies. Also Riccardo Minali, who left the Vuelta with four top 10 finishes, knows the GP de Fourmies well since he finished 9th in 2018. They can count on the support of Frenchman Théo Delacroix and Belgian riders Ludwig De Winter, Kévin Van Melsen and Loïc Vliegen, who returns into competition after a knee injury. After the successful weekend in the Doubs region, Frédéric Amorison will again direct the team.

« I’m very happy to pin a number on again and to be reunited with my teammates and the staff. My knee recovered well and last Tuesday I tasted the race intensity at the kermess race in Gullegem for the first time since the Tour de Wallonie un July. Next Sunday I will discover the GP de Fourmies, so I took the time to thoroughly analyze the parcours. I’ll be ready to support my teammates so they can go for the best possible result. Personally, I’m expecting to suffer, but I want to take advantage from each race and each training day to progress. Because I want to show something at the end of the season! »
