GP Jef Scherens

Devriendt 4th in Leuven

The peloton in Leuven was treated on nice summer weather for the 55th edition of the GP Jef Scherens (1.1, 15/08). The pace of the 190 kilometer race was fast in the beginning, until four riders managed to escape on the circuit which will be used for the World Championships next month. In his first race as a trainee with Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, Stijn Daemen lead the peloton to keep the advantage of the breakaway under 4 minutes. After the leaders were caught during the last of thirteen laps, Aimé De Gendt attacked on the Wijnpers. His attempt didn’t succeed, so the sprint train of the Belgian team was put into place. Planckaert, Delacroix, De Gendt and Koch kept the pace high in order to avoid attacks in the small and steep streets in the centre of Leuven and to bring Tom Devriendt in a good position towards the theatre. Niccolo Bonifazio succeeded himself on the palmares of the race, Koch sprinted to 4th place.
