12. Louis Meintjes attacks & wins solo Giro dell’Appennino, his first victory since 2015.
“The Giro dell'Appennino was part of my final preparations for the Tour de France. I remember telling my wife not to watch the race on TV because it would end in a sprint. We had a clear plan and a solid team, with Quinten Hermans and Lorenzo Rota leading the way. But we had to improvise. I was in the leading group and in a good position to defend the team's best result. So I was a little nervous. I made sure to slow down my three breakaway companions to allow Georg Zimmermann to join us, because I believed in his chances of winning in a tactical final. Georg encouraged me to attack and this strategy worked, as we finished on the podium together. This win was a pleasant surprise."
