Eschborn - Frankfurt

With the record holder to the first race in Germany

This Sunday, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux starts its fifth month of racing in Eschborn-Frankfurt (1.UWT), the first race of the year on German soil, with record holder Alexander Kristoff.

Last year, the Belgian World Team showed itself on the final circuit thanks to Georg Zimmermann, who was part of the breakaway and afterwards guided Andrea Pasqualon to fourth place. This edition was exceptionally held in September, but this Sunday the race returns to its traditional date on May 1st.

The main part of the race, for 185 kilometer, takes place in the Taunus mountains north of the Metropolis Frankfurt-am-Main. After the start in Eschborn the riders will be confronted with eight categorized climbs as they have to cover almost 3000 climbing meters.

Once the last obstacle is behind the back, the sprinters have 40 kilometer to organize and after two and a half laps we will know whether another sprinter will be added to the palmares of the race.

In addition to his four victories, Alexander Kristoff also finished third in the two previous editions. He will line up alongside Biniam Girmay, who returns into competition for the first time since his historical success in Ghent-Wevelgem and who will race for the first time on German soil.

Sven Erik Bystrøm, Aimé De Gendt and Barnabás Peák also return to competition after an important training period. Belgian rider Tom Devriendt, fourth in Paris-Roubaix, and German rider Georg Zimmermann, who distinguished himself in the previous edition of the race, complete the selection under the direction of Aike Visbeek and Pieter Vanspeybrouck.

« This Sunday I’m expecting the traditional race scenario in Frankfurt, which is a difficult race on the climbs but eventually ends in a group sprint. At my first participation in 2012 a breakaway managed to stay ahead but that was the last time in the history of the race. I finished sixth and that was the only time I was not on the podium. Our ambition is to continue this trend tomorrow. Eschborn-Frankfurt is one of the races in which I have a lot of experience. For example, on certain points in the parcours you just know when there will be a possibility to go to the front on the left side or rather on the right side. I use this experience to guide our young riders such as Biniam Girmay. His presence in our team this Sunday increases our chances on a good result. I’m looking forward to see him shine again after his break, just like I loved to watch the brilliant performances of so many different riders of the team in the most important races. »

« My second part of the season couldn't start better thanks this my contract extension with Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux! This motivates me even more for my upcoming race block in Europe, starting with Eschborn-Frankfurt this Sunday, followed by my first Grand Tour and a couple of Belgian classics. I feel ready, both mentally and physically, thanks to an ideal preparation in my home city in Asmara at more than 2400 meters of altitude. » « Earlier this week, I landed in Frankfurt to ride my first kilometers on German soil. Together with our sports director Pieter Vanspeybrouck I did the recon of the last climbs of the final of Eschborn-Frankfurt. The parcours of this prestigious race suits me on paper thanks to the presence of the hills. I'm looking forward to race alongside Alexander Kristoff again, he's arguably the dream teammate for this race. »
