On Sunday, Estonian Rein Taaramäe will represent Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux at the Chrono des Nations (1.1, 17/10). This one-day race, as its name suggests, takes place in the form of an individual time trial around the town of Les Herbiers, in Vendée. The 25 participants will complete a 44.5-kilometer loop on a rolling yet irregular route, passing through the localities of Le Boupère, Saint-Prouant and Mouchamps.
Rein Taaramäe will start at 3:23 pm (local time) with his Estonian champion’s jersey, a title he acquired against the clock last June. The 34-year-old rider will then conclude an exceptional 2021 season, during which he made history for the team. Not only by becoming the first rider to win a national road title, but also by winning a stage in the Vuelta a España, atop Picon Blanco after a breakaway. His victory earned him the rights to wear the leader’s jersey, a feat never achieved before by the team on a Grand Tour.
